Schools Library Service

Supplying first rate learning resources for schools to support curriculum needs. We provide help and advice on all aspects of library provision, as well as the promotion of books and reading for pleasure.

Further Information

Standard Service - Primary Schools

  • One project loan per year group per term: a selection of non-fiction books plus additional AV resources and some fiction where appropriate. Project boxes are put together by qualified librarians and tailored to individual requests; each collection will include 20-40 items depending on availability of resources and the number of children in the year group
  • One fiction set per class teacher:
    a choice of one of the following depending on availability:
    - 30 copies of one title
    - 5 x 6 copies of one title
    - 20 mixed fiction titles
    - 15 mixed titles by a single author/illustrator
  • One artefact collection or story sack per year group
  • One whiteboard active loan per year group as available
  • Door-to-door delivery and collection services every term
  • Access to the Schools’ Library Service base throughout the year including school holidays

Premium Service - Primary Schools

Only available if Standard Service(above)is provided:

  • Annual loan of 150 popular fiction and non-fiction books to update and refresh school’s own library book stock (approximate value £1,500)
  • 4 hours consultancy time: advice and support on school’s own library from a qualified librarian, including a written report
  • One hour staff training on making the best use of the Schools’ Library Service or a similar chosen topic; this can be delivered in school as a twilight/inset day session or on site at SLS base

Library Services - Special Schools

  • SLS Librarians will consult with each school to deliver the most appropriate service for their pupils and staff
  • Resources from those listed in the general service offer will be included on request
  • Door-to-door delivery and collection services every term
  • Access to the Schools’ Library Service base throughout the year including school holidays
    • Year 7 (transition year) service - Secondary Schools

      • Annual loan of a 150 popular fiction and non-fiction books to update and refresh school’s own library book stock (approximate value £1,500) chosen from available book stock at SLS by the School librarian or designated members of school staff
      • One artefact collection - a selection of items on a cultural or historical theme
      • One project collection - up to 20 books on a chosen topic or topics
      • All or part of the loans may be exchanged at any time during the school year by arrangement
      • Door-to-door delivery/collection services by arrangement and subject to set termly dates
      • School librarian and teaching staff have access to the Schools’ Library Service base throughout the year including school holidays
      • This is a new service for 2018/19

      Additional Services available by arrangement

      • Story time sessions (Early Years and KS1): Sharing books, stories, songs and puppets
      • Book Bites (KS1 and KS2) - Introduction to a range of authors and books to support reading for pleasure. A selection of the books used in the session will be left in school on loan for the term. Book lists provided
      • Reading for Pleasure (Teachers and Teaching Assistants):
        Recommendations of books and authors for staff to use with children. New books and authors to try and reminders of old favourites. Guide to what is available in the SLS. Book lists provided. This can be delivered in school as twilight/inset day session or at SLS base
      • Poetry Pick (KS1 and KS2) Session sharing poems and poets with the opportunity for some creative writing. A selection of books used in the session will be left in school on loan for the term. Book lists provided
      • Pre/post OFSTED visits advice and support from qualified librarian on school library including written recommendations

      Please contact lead officers to make a booking. All sessions listed can be tailored to suit the school as required and SLS staff are happy to discuss any bespoke request regarding library provision or reading not covered above. Please note only a limited number of bookings are taken by SLS each term.

      Quality Assurance

      • The service issues and returns up to 75,000 books and other resources annually to schools across Wirral and records a high level of satisfaction with service provision
      • Qualified staff keep up-to-date with professional developments and new books and authors and are committed to sharing best practice
      • Staff maintain excellent links with service users and are always open to suggestions from schools and teaching staff to ensure the provision of a flexible, current and responsive service
